Stevenson

I’m sure there is at least one frequent commenter on MDP who will recognize this place, even if I don’t write anything about it.  However, I will let everyone else know that this is the campus of Stevenson University  (formerly known as Villa Julie College) in Stevenson, MD.

Batting Practice

I don’t like to include people in pictures most of the time (after all they aren’t nearly as interesting as the rest of the things in our state),  but I enjoyed seeing this person watching batting practice at Camden Yards the other day.    When I was a kid I always wanted to get to the game early and take it all in for as long as I could.

Shed

As a follow-up to last week’s Mt Royal Station post, this is the train shed behind the station, which joins the north end of the Howard Street tunnel.

Clock

This clock comes from a significant Baltimore landmark.  Why is it significant?  Why was it built?  These answers and more next week.

Behind Home

Here’s a shot of the booths behind home plate at Camden Yards.    If you are interested in more pictures of the park, you should go to www.welcometobaltimorehon.com to check out their Daily Camden feature. Each day they have someone new from around town take a picture of the park.  You could even sign up to take one too.

TRP

Notice anything odd about this building?   What’s that on the roof?  In the building’s lobby used to be a model of the building itself.  There were also pictures on the walls of the superstructure.  We used to park there quite often in the early 1990’s and, being ignorant of the building’s past it just seemed like they were proud of their workplace.   Of course there’s a reason why it was and why it still is so interesting.    Those offices in the front of the building with the green windows were added onto the building after its initial build.  That superstructure was added to the building to hold the front addition.   It’s something I’ve never seen anywhere else.

MDP is off for memorial day. Hope you enjoy the long weekend.

O’s Clock

Just a shot of the clock at the top of the scoreboard at Oriole Park.

Volleyball

There are a few clues in this picture that betray the fact that this was not taken on an actual beach.   The square lamp in the foreground and the strip of concrete in the background may be hints that this is in the middle of Baltimore.   In fact, this is Rash Field, the flat stip of land between the harbor and federal hill park.    It’s been home to any number of odd things, from ice rinks to this volleyball court.

New and Old Line

The Maryland Line Monument in the background, and in detail below, was dedicated, though over 100 years after the conflict, to the Maryland Veterans of the Revolutionary war.  It sits between the Lyric Opera House and the B&O Mt. Royal Station, currently the home of a part of the Maryland Institute College of Art, which explains the foreground.

According to www.monumentcity.org, The statue atop the monument is a representation of Liberty. She holds the declaration of independence in her hand.
