For 125 years, this has been the home of the Governor of Maryland. It is located on state circle, but outside the circle, which is occupied by this building. It was built in 1870, and since that day this building has hosted the executives of Maryland, the Royalty of England, famous works of art, and much more.

Boyers Farm

Today’s photo comes from guest photographer Trish, who was also kind enough to tell us a little bit about the farm. Boyer farm has some interesting history to it. It’s been growing peaches and pumpkins and wartermelons and other wonderful stuff since the late 1800s.
The peach trees and the verdant acres, located right in the middle of housing subdivisions, have always been a refreshing staple to the town of Severn, Maryland.
You could always pull over the side of the road or walk there when you watched to check out the produce and the farm has always supplied the local community with a fresh crop of pumpkins every fall. Unfortunately, the 52-acre farm has been sold to developers to make way for townhouses. Mr. Boyer, who still lives in a house on the outskirts of the farm with family, says he’s getting old and just can’t maintain it (Although I think the age of 54 is still rather young). Either way, something like this was bound to happen, as the opening of the mega-mall Arundel Mills has shot up the property value of the surrounding area (Boyer’s farm is just a five minute drive away).
For some more information about the sale, you can go here.

The State House

The Oldest State House in the nation still in legislative use.
Capital of the United States from November 1983-August 1984.
Location where Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris to end the Revolutionary War.
Available in Larger Sizes: state-house-large.jpg
The “dome” is made of Cypress, brought from the eastern shore, and there were no nails used to put it together.
When they replaced the acorn at the base of the lightning rod they had people create 32 different picees of it all across the state and then assembled it at the top.

Woodwind.

Well, yesterday’s contest didn’t last too long, but I’m glad that Captain Jen came to the site to add some professional authority to our contest. (Also, AJ, you got it right too, congratulations.)
So, I didn’t get a chance to actually sail on Satuday when the picture was taken, but I’m certainly going out next time I’m in Annapolis. I spend most of my workday looking out my window yearning to be on a boat, so this will be a great chance to do so. It would appear as though all of these folks are enjoying themselves.
Today’s picture features the Woodwind, sister ship to the Woodwind II from yesterday.

Woodwind II

You might recognize this boat from somewhere. Any guesses? You’re clue is that it is both famous and is docked in Annapolis. Obviously its main use is for sailing charters, but you know it for another reason. Guess away.

High Winds, Stay Off Bridge
In the background you see the Francis Scott key Memorial Bridge, which carries 695, the Baltimore Beltway, across the river, not the bay. Not only is the key bridge one of the most recognizable sites in the southern Baltimore skyline, its also one of the most dangerous places for an empty tractor-trailer to be on a windy day. For some truckers who are carrying light amounts of hazardous materials on windy days, neither the bridge nor the two tunnels are acceptable means of travelling through Baltimore. For them, the only answer is to travel the opposite direction on the Beltway over land.
Why the sudden interest in tractor trailers, you ask? Well this is just one of the many thoughts I was having on my commute the other day when I passed the hazmat signs for one of the tunnels.

Smallwood, just like last fridays. Ft. Smallwood, by the way is one of the prettiest bayside parks in the state, maybe you could go there to do some barbequing of your own this weekend.

Sparrow’s Point
Here’s a shot of Sparrow’s point, taken from Ft. Smallwood. This has nothing to do with Western Maryland, I’m just throwing it in for some variety.
