Welcome to Utica

Today we are visiting the Utica covered bridge.  The southenmost of the three bridges, it is located about midway between Frederick and Thurmont.   The Utica covered bridge originally spanned the Monocacy river.  It was damaged by a flood in 1889 and what remained was moved to this spot.

Roddy Road Bridge

By far my favorite of the three covered bridges in Frederick County, the Roddy Run Bridge is also the smallest.   It is only40 feet long, but it packs all the charm you would expect from any 155 year old bridge.

Loy’s Station

This is a shot from the inside of the Loy’s Station bridge.  Though, it’s park setting and 360 degree accessibility make this the most picturesque of all three Frederick bridges, it’s unfortunately not 100% original.  Two arsonists burned the bridge in 1991.  While many of the timbers are from the first bridge, much of it is new.

The Bridges of Frederick County

There are 6 covered bridges that survive in Maryland today.   We’ve visited one of them already, the Jericho covered bridge which spans between Baltimore County and Harford County.    There are two more in Cecil County, and there are three in Frederick County, which we will visit this week.

Birds: a four part series

If you are keeping track, yes this is the fourth shot of birds at chesapeake beach, that has shown up here on MDP.

These birds saved me today as I fell asleep last night before I could dig a more recent photo out of my computer to post today.

Dorsey Revealed

If you correctly identified the sliver of a train station in Tuesday’s picture as Dorsey, then you deserve a hand.

Resco

If you have ever exited onto russell st. from I95 you have likely passed right past this very stack.  It belongs to a trash incinerator and power gernerator located just south of the Ravens stadium.  Where did the name Resco come from for this plant?  It stands for Refuse Energy Systems Co.

Weekly train photo

This is one of the newer engines in the MARC fleet.    I believe that despite its new looks it is actually a refurbished engine that the MTA purchased a few years back from another transit system.  bonus points if you can pick out this location.

Bayspan

This morning was a bit of a rushed period of time at the MDPhotoquarters.  So luckily I have had this one saved for a while. If you’ve ever seen the ad campaign for 1877bayspan you’ll probably get the joke in this title.  Otherwise, it’s just another picture from the Salisbury zoo.
