Law Building

Across from the courthouse in Denton is the law building.   It has nothing to do with the court though.  It was named after the “Law Building and Realty Company”

Caroline County

Back East, this is the Caroline County courthouse, with the Caroline county flag flying in front.  I’ve killed two birds with one stone adding to my county courthouse collection and county flag collection.

Fifth Regiment Armory

We are interrupting our trip to Denton.  Today we picture the Fifth Regiment Armory.  If you’ve ever driven down Howard Street you’ve likely noticed this building.  Or if you’ve taken the light rail (and I don’t blame you if you haven’t) in Baltimore you’ve likely seen this building at the top of the train’s run down Howard Street.

For quite a while, it was the largest indoor space in the state.  It was home to the 1912 Democratic convention wherein Woodrow Wilson was nominated as candidate.

The sculprutre above the door is called and also reads “For the Glory of Maryland”

Which brings us to our second subject and the reason why we interrupted our trip to the eastern shore.  Today, funeral services will be held for William Donald Schaefer.   The flag atop the armory is at half mast in honor of the man who was Mayor of Baltimore, Governor of Maryland, and later the Comptroller of Maryland.

Thanks to Bryan, who will be working at the ceremony, for the picture today’s picture.

Denton MD

The business end of this skipjack is revealing the MDP city of this week.  Welcome to Denton.  The county seat of Caroline county offers a bit of eastern shore charm and history.  It was as far upstream as one could get on the Choptank river during the days when rivers were the most imortant means of transportation, both for goods and people.   Like so many other towns it grew around and out from it’s waterfront.   The sites of denton today are a mix of original structures as well as  those that have been erected to mimic the town’s past.

Shirts

If you’ve ever seen this building from the Eastern Shore before then you might know where we are spending the rest of our week.   If not, you are in for quite a pleasant suprise.

Capital Crescent

This is a supporting structure from the bridge featured here. The bridge, which carries the capital crescent trail (actually at that point called the georgetown branch trail) runs over rock creek.  Since this was just a little bit down from the rest of this week’s rock creek shots, it seemed like a good cap to the week.

Statues

These statues are located along the rock creek park trail. I’ve always wondered where they came from. They are clearly in someone’s backyard and they are clearly older than the home by which they stand.   My curiousity really stems from the fact that they seem like they could match the statuary from the seminary, not one mile away.  I’m assuming the similarity is just a coincidence and no one would steal something and then hide it in plain sight in their yard one mile away.  However, every time I go past here I still wonder if it could be the case.

Trash Continued

The trash piles were in the middle of the Rock Creek Trail.  Thanks to a park clean up effort, any number of odd and unusual things were cleaned out of the creek.  The tires are to be expected, but who put a toilet, a muffler, a 50 gallon oil drum, and a baby carriage in the river?   There was also a washing machine and any number of small and unusual one off items that I didn’t picture here.

Where did this come from

These piles of trash showed up a most unusual place…..

Dairy Show

We’re going to transition out of the animal world with today’s post.  I found this in the window of a sign shop in Denton.
