Choose Civility

I’ve been talking about this for a long time and I’ve finally captured it.   This is the obnoxious Howard County, “Choose Civility,” bumper sticker.

What’s the big deal?   Well I guess it’s not much of a big deal unless you live outside of Howard County, in which case it implies that where you live is less “civilized” than those in Howard County.  For those in the county it seems to be some sort of ego boost.

I’ve been working in Howard county for a few years now and I have to say that I’m not as angry about this as I used to be.   I guess I’ve just adopted a live and let live attitude about it.  But…  it does make me feel better when I occasionally make fun of Howard County.

Home Telescope

Yesterday’s college campus was Montgomery College’s Rockville campus.  We had previously featured the germantown campus on account of their giant globle water tower.  Yesterday’s picture was one that I took when I mistakenly went to the wrong campus only to find a telescope and no tower.   It turns out that the rockville campus is pretty large, with an enrollment of over 15,000 students.

The telescope will unite the two posts in this week’s mini theme.  This home sits right in the middle of Ocean City.  I suppose that, just like the guy next to you on the beach with his blackberry, some astronomers can’t leave their work behind for a summer vacation either.

College of Mystery

If someone names this Maryland college, I will be extremely impressed.

Key Bridge

In researching my photo-chives for yesterday’s picture I found this one which I really liked.  It’s just a rarely captured view.

Wind Advisory

The wind advisory that we’ve been dealing with lately has made me wonder why exactly the local news has decided to warn us about wind.  Who will take notice of this warning and actually change their behavior.  I suppose it largely effect people whose occupation involves being in high places. This makes me think  about the plight of truckers traversing the key bridge.  Those thoughts made me realize that I had a picture of trucks crossing the bridge.

Linden Oak Again

If you guessed that yesterday’s picture was the Linden Oak, then congratulations.   I have a soft spot for what may be our state’s oldest remaining White Oak tree.    It’s hard to not to be impressed with something that was alive 25 years before George Washington was.  Even this picture is deceptive.  It’s nearly impossible to fit the tree in a standard frame and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without using a super wide lens.  (10mm)

The tree is just fascinating becasue a passer-by on 355 wouldn’t realize how huge it is simply becasue it’s about 20 or so feet below the road grade.   It’s becasue of this, that I feel like someone in the know whenever I pass by and that makes me feel good.

You may be able to guess what tree this is.
