Another Winter Scene

Like yesterday’s photo, this one came from close to my home because, without power, without heat, and without the ability to move my car, there were limited options this weekend.   Did you notice the odd part of this scene?  That tree still has it’s leaves. They all died but never fell off.   In fact looking at the same tree this morning, there were many leaves on the ground around it.  Turns out the only thing that can make them fall off is a big heap of heavy snow.

In my very limited (as in, one tree) experience, that means the whole tree was already dead. It happened to the maple in our front yard a few years ago.

Many species of oak keep their leaves during the winter.

Well, I thought that the oaks that keep their leaves also keep their green. I could be wrong about that.

Our yard in Illinois is full of oaks of many varieties. They all keep their brown (dried up, ready to fall) leaves until spring.
