MOO

cows2bs.jpg

Found these guys in a farm on the way to the pictures of the Garrison Fort two weeks ago.   I thought it was a bit funny that there was a cow pasture just a block away from the Baltimore beltway.   I shouldn’t say funny.   I really felt glad that this was there.

Babe’s Dream

babe1s.jpg

I went to the ballpark the other night to redeem some vouchers for free game tickets.  Of course, that was Wednesday night after there was a day game, and the box office closed by the time I got there after work.  That left me some time to wander around.  It also gave me a chance to get a picture of this statue titled, Babe’s Dream.

Of course this is Babe Ruth, who was born in Baltimore just down the street from the stadium, and who as a child lived in a house located just around where second base in Oriole Park is today.

The statue shows he was alive from February 6, 1895 to August 16, 1948 hence this Sunday will be the anniversary of his death.

Back to an old favorite

assateague23s.jpg

Last year I might have gone overboard with the pictures from Assateague.  However, it’s a fun place to visit, and being on the eastern shore recently, it seemed a good idea to return.  Unlike last year’s visit when you couldn’t sneeze without a pony looking at you, this time around they were few and far between.  I was glad not to run back into the snake from last year, but I did feel a little diappointed at the lack of ponies.  Of course in 100 degree weather, you can’t blame them for staying hidden in the shade.  Seeing them or not seeing them is a chance that a visitor takes.   Luckily, this guy decided to brave the heat and stand idly in the middle of a parking lot where he abligingly posed for this glamour shot.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

For $80 you too can jump out of an ariplane over Ocean City.  These folks made the journey 12,000 feet into the air to jump out of an airplane and land safely back at the airport.   It’s not for me, but the people seemed to be pretty happy when they made it back to the ground.

Brooklandwood

bville1s.jpg

This is the Brooklandwood Planation house in Lutherville, Baltimore County.  It is best known as the mansion on the grounds on the St. Pauls school, but it could be known for any number of other things.  First, it sits on top of a large rolling hill and it commands quite an impressive view of north-west Baltimore.   Second, it is in remarkably good shape, due largely to the efforts of the school to maintain its signature buildings.   Finnally,  and most importantly is its historical significance, which I will offer to you as a quote from the historic marker placed by the school and the Maryland Historical Society, right outside the building.  It reads:  “Built by Charles Carroll of Carrollton for his daughter, Mary Caton.  Site of the first Maryland Hunt Cup and Grand National Races.  Owned succesively by John Cockey, Charles Carroll, George Brown, Captain Isaac Emerson and Saint Paul’s School (Established 1849).”

Rubble

rubble3s.jpg

The other day I noticed that there was a fence surrounding this building near my office, which had been vacant since I began working there.  I was optimistic about the fence bringing a new tenant and a sign of economic progress.  I’m not sure how to interpret what the fence really meant: Stay out of here, we’re tearing this place up.  Perhaps it’s still a good sign, as it means that someone is interested in doing something with the space.

The Garrison Fort

gf1s.jpg

An unassuming building located in a culdasac in an ordinary suburban community of ranch houses and green yards, the Garrison Fort can easily be missed.   Even driving by it, one might mistake it for a barn or an old home or any number of things.   However, this fort has beeen sitting just north of Baltimore for three centuries, and it sits today in a very well preserved state.  I can’t say much more that can’t be said by the sign outside the fort, so I’ll offer a picture of that as well.

Window

gw1s.jpg

This tiny window is severly disproportional to the large stone building in which it can be found.   The reasons why this building would have such a large stone face and a small open window will be made clear tomorrow.   If you want to guess what this is though, you are welcome to do so.

Circuit Court

Yesterday’s post about the Howard County courthouse reminded me of this picture.  Maybe one day MDP will have pictures of all the state’s courts.

Courthouse Path

courthouse-paths.jpg

Also in Ellicott City, this stone structure marks the begining of the path to the Howard County courthouse, made of similar material.
