Orpheus

op1s.jpg

When I have taken guests from out of the state to Ft. McHenry, I’ve often been aked to explain the statue you pass as you enter the park.  Questions generally start with, “is that Francis Scott Key?”

Well it isn’t Key, but it is dedicated to him and to the soldiers and sailors of the Battle of North Point.

For more info, the NPS has a very informative fact sheet about this statue that was very obviously written in response to the number of people who just don’t get why that statue is there.  You can find it here.

Last reservior shot

Here’s a shot of the reservior from the opposite side of the boat ramp.  In the distance is the Brighton Dam, which you may remember from this post.

Triadelphia Reservior

boats-in-res-copys2.jpg

On the way to Brookeville, I passed by the Triadelphia reservior.  I found an entrance to a parking lot for the reservior boat ramp and I went straight in. Luckily I found these boats ready to make a pretty cool picture for me.

President Madison in Brookeville, MD

bentley-houses.jpg

As you might remember about the post (sign post) from Brookeville, MD.  The town was the refuge of President Madison and many others after the British attacked DC.  Today is the anniversary of that day, August 26, 1814.   Yes, the 185th anniversary.  This is a picture of the house of Caleb Bentley, then postmaster of Brookeville, who hosted the president that night.

AIR 2

key-from-air.jpg

Because even I think it’s cheezy to offer two nearly identical shots two days in a row, I’m putting up the picture of the key bridge and a bonus picture of Chestertown and the Chester river in Kent County.

I was excited about the picture of the key bridge because the clouds only opened up for a second to allow me to get it.  Even then you can tell there is some haze around the bridge, but I took what I could get.

Below is the first picture I’ve posted from Kent county, but there will be plenty more in the future.

Tomorrow we are back on land with a post that follows up on one from a few months ago wherein the date August 26th was mentioned.

Air

air2s.jpg

The minute I get in an airplane I tend to be glued to the window trying to make out what I’m seeing below.  Here’s a shot of my airplane from last week heading up over Anne Arundel County.  Sparrows Point is visible under the wing but the Key Bridge is obscured by a cloud for now.

BWI Again

bwi2s.jpg

I took a flight out of BWI yesterday and got some great photos of Maryland from the sky.  However, I haven’t downloaded them yet.  So for the time being I’m offering this teaser shot of the terminal with the promise that exciting new photos are landing soon.

Havre De Grace Railroad Overpass

hdgbridge1s.jpg

Here’s a shot of a pass just before the train tracks go over the susquehanna river.  I would like to find out how old this is becasue the size certianly implies that it was built quite a while ago.

Dam

dam2s.jpg

This small dam is hidden off of Rt. 29 near Colesville.  I pass it often, but decided to get out of my car and take a picture just recently.

Brooklandwood 2

sps2.jpg

Last week when I featured the Brooklandville Plantation, I mentioned that it enjoyed quite a nice view over northwest Baltimore. This shot is  a part of that view.  Far to the left is Towson, and, though it looks like a rolling mountain, that space to its right is Northern Baltimore.
