A great place to visit.

ecsmall.jpg

As I mentioned before, I have really warmed up to Ellicott city since I was a child and my parents would drag me there on weekends.   Now that I work in Howard county, Ellicott Citty seems like a bit of an oasis.   It’s one of the most picturesque locations within a lunch break’s drive of my office.  It has a great many hills, a valley, a railroad, a good amount of  meandering streets, a lot of old buildings, a unique historical intrigue, a charm, and an ability to constantly provide a new and more interesting site to picture.

Today’s picture is just a way of seeing an old friend from a different angle.  In fact I’ve never ventured up the hills of Ellicott city, where the courthouse lies, to see what else was there.  From the eastern hill you can really get a view of the city as it was quite a while ago.  You see the mill that brought the town to being and the railroad that brought it into history.  You see the slopes of its hills and the expanse of its valley.

I hope someone starts Ellicott City Daily Photo.  I would be a reader.

Montgomery College’s Water Tower

globe3.jpg

I once read about how the water tower at Montgomery College had been painted like the earth.  I knew I would have to investigate further.  Unfortunately there are too many campuses of Montgomery college and I went to two wrong ones before two nights ago, when I finally found it.   I was just across the street from this campus by chance.  I didn’t have too much time there or otherwise maybe I could have compsed a neat shot with just the earth and the moon but without the radio tower.

Found IT

I’ve been looking for the subject of this picture for a long time.  I haven’t been looking hard, but I did think I was in the right spot and ended up being too far south once.  Finally last night I was in the right neighborhood and I went over and got a good picture.  Any guesses as to what this is?

Monument

w-c3.jpg

This is a picture from the Westminster Cemetery.  The entire area is located on a hill.  The hill’s top, which is the center of the cemetry, holds a single tree and this monument / fountain of an unknown nature.  I thought it was an interesting focal point.

Downtown

Here’s a picture of the Downtown Silver Spring welcome sign/fountain.  The sign is interesting to me as I’ve always liked the fountain aspect of it.  The water slowly falls down the stones behind the letters.

Here’s one last view of the hospital.    This is the back of one of the buildings, but I like this picture becasue at this distance you can barely tell the building is abandoned.  However, if you look just a little bit closer, the clues are there.

Not so quiet.

1d.jpg

This picture comes to us from corresponding photographer Brett.  It was taken in Quiet Waters park in Annapolis.  The park, despite its name, is quite dog friendly.  In fact a simple google search of the park reveals the quote “My dog loves it here.”

I believe that in the background you can see Wilson, but I don’t know who is in the foreground.

End of the Line

g2s.jpg

Well, nobody guessed at yesterday’s post, but I’ll tell you the answer anyway.  It is the Glenn Dale hospital in Prince George’s county.  The hospital was established for the treatment of tuberculosis.  Back in the day Prince George’s was a sufficient distance from the city to be considered an adequate retreat for the sick.  As time went by, TB became less and less of a relevant disease until the point when the hospital became useless. It was eventually abandoned, with much of its equiptment and furniture still in the buildings.  It served other uses for a while, including a police training grounds.  In fact there is a sign next to the one in the picture which warns visitors not to enter as a live police exercise is going on.   Of course that exercise ended almost a decade ago, and without a purpose since then,  the buildings of the hospital complex have fallen victim to vandals and to general rot.

Sadly, I have little more to show you becasue I have actually abided by the sign shown here. I do really like this picture despite its flaws becasue I really enjoy that lampost with its lantern turned to the side.  The campus is full of these destroyed posts.   I wish I could show you more.

Security there isn’t tight, but it is present.  There are police monitors and there’s even a security trailer on site.   The stablity of the buildings is in question, and the presence of asbestos adds to the risks a visitor would face.  So I truely believe that the signs are there for the visitor’s benefit, not for that of the buildings themselves.

Where is this?

g1s.jpg

This building reminds me a bit of last week’s shot from the NPS.  However, this is a totally different abandoned historic property.  Like the NPS this building is part of a series of buildings on a large campus.  One of the key things about it is that there seems to be no efforts made at all towards its rennovation.

Any guesses?

Edgewood

edgewood1s.jpg

Contributing photographer Bryan sent this picture along.  It is the  Edgewood train station, one of the places where Obama stopped during his train ride to DC for the inaguaration.   This is the view looking at the southbound tracks towards Baltimore.
