GF Panorama

gf-rapid-run.jpg

Yesterday’s picture with the Heron came from Great Falls, on the Potomac river.  The river makes a desent of just about 65 feet there as it winds its way through craggy rocks and around an island.  That island is named after the most famous of park designers, Frederick Law Olmstead,  who was a major supporter of the creation of Great Falls and the entire C&O Canal park.   Today’s view is a shot of the water rushing along the east side of the island, between it and the MD shore.   The western side offers quite an impressive view of the rapids from an observation deck.  It can be seen in this panoramic shot:  great-falls-panorama-3.jpg

Stranded?

gf1.jpg

Any guess as to where this heron is standing?  If you are wondering what I am talking about, then you should look towards the bottom of the picture.  That is a bird perched next to those dangerous rapids! No worries though.  Their feet are well adapted to rocky environment and they enable thebirds to hold rocks in the middle of rapids as they search for fish.

Constellation

cons.jpg

As for yesterday’s mystery picture:  It is actually one of the many former railroad stations that have been converted to private residences.   Though now thanks to your guesses yesterday, I have new photo ideas for a trip to arbutus to find its look alike and to Frederick to picture the Barbara Fritchie house.

Today’s photo has nothing to do with that though.  Today we see the USS Constellation, proudly on display in the Inner Harbor.   Around fifteen years ago the ship was suffering from some serious water problems.  It was sinking into the harbor.  Its masts had to be removed to reduce its weight, and then people were eventually denied access.  For quite some time water had prevented people from getting to the lower decks.   The ship was eventually dragged to a dry dock and repaired.   Then, a decade ago, the ship was returned to the harbor with its masts in place and with its buoyancy issues completely resolved, as you can see by the position of the water line.

Anybody want to guess the significance of this home in Baltimore County?

Fountain

I’ve always liked this fountain, which sits outside the Bank of America branch on Pratt and Charles St. in Baltimore.

The fountian is engraved with the names of all of MD’s counties and Baltimre City.

Crisfields

cfgs.jpg

It’s a complete coincidence that the Manokin Church drew MDP to it’s graveyard on the way to Crisfield because the Crisfield family is buried there.  You may have noticed the disconnect here.   The Crisfields are buried in Princess Anne, not in the town of Crisfield!  Why?  Becasue they actually had very little to do with the town itself.

It turns out that the town Crisfield took it’s name from JW Crisfield, a Princess Anne resident who brought the railroads twenty miles south to the bay at a town which would then bare his name.  We see the graves of his offspring in this picture as their names are still clearly marked.  cfg.jpg

Manokin

manokinsmall.jpg

If you thought we were out of South-Eastern MD, I’m afraid you have a few more days of waiting.  However, I can assure you that the historical intrigue is worth the wait.   Why, because of a family that is buried in the cemetery outside of this church in Princess Anne.  Any guesses?

As for the church itself, there is a bit of interesting history here too.  The historical marker outside the building reads

Spanish Ballroom

spanish-ballroom.JPG

I was digging through old pictures the other day, which in modern times means looking through folders on my computer, and came across this one.   I know that I’ve done Glen Echo Park to death on this site. However, I just can’t resist this one extra post. I just like this picture.  I thought of Glen Echo again after the discussion on Pittsburgh Daily Photo  and this shot was the first thing on my mind.  Perhaps I didn’t care for picture a year ago when I was posting about Glen Echo becasue the lamp is sort of cropped out.  Now I certainly do care for it, and I hope you do too.   The spanish ballroom was one of many attractions at the park that has found a new life in the modern era, oddly enough in a similar way to its original use.

Crabs

crabs1.jpg

I always like it when a business (especially a restaurant) announces their purpose by erecting a giant plastic replica of it.  In this case, we know that this restaurant, Side St. Seafood in Crisfield, is likely to serve you crabs.   I would have really loved it if the was a green shaded crab somewhere closer to the dock to denote a company that catches live crabs.   I guess some folks aren’t as creative as others.

There are plenty more examples of this sort of thing that I can post. I’m thinking you: Pig on top of Andy Nelson’s barbeque.

Next to the post office in Glyndon, I found this pump and its shelter.  What I don’t know about this pump, is it’s relation to the Glyndon Volunteer Fire Co, which seems to have lent their name to the planter aside the pump.

These grounds used to be adjacent to the railroad station, and across from the general store, which means that this would probably be a good place for a public water source.
