Softshell

softshell2.jpg

Here’s a view of the action at the softshell crab festival in Crisfield.  You are seeing the later half of the assembly line.  In the back the crabs are fried, and in the front you can see the white bread that will await those crabs when they come out of the fryer.  Then, there’s a person to take your money and give you a sandwich.

The Grey Eagle

grsm.jpg

Princess Anne (a town found on the way south to Crisfield on rt. 13) contains one of the oldest, if not the absolute oldest continuously operating Police stations in the state.  Built in 1857, the building has been recently restored and will continue to operate as a full service police station.    The grey stones which lent the building its nickname “Grey Eagle” make up 3 foot thick walls.

Crisfield

crisfield-dock2.jpg

This is a picture from the county dock in Crisfield, in Somerset County.  Located on the south-eastern end of the bay, Crisfield was home to the softshell crab festival this past weekend and it remained a popular destination even with the overcast and occasionally rainy weather.  Out to the distance on the water you can see James Island State Park.

Return to Dan’s Rock

dr2-small.jpg

You may remember that last year after Memorial day MDP visited Dan’s rock, from which today’s picture was also taken.

This year MDP took a Memorial day trip to the Southern Eastern Shore, taking plenty of pictures of towns and a festival along the way.  So stay tuned this week for some exciting new territory.

Brighton2

brighton3small.jpg

Sorry for the late post today.  This is the other side of the dam from yesterday’s picture.  Looking out over Triadelphia Reservoir, just before sunset.  I was ready to sit there and get the whole sunset, but they started to close the parking lot and I didn’t want to be stuck there.   So I’ll have to return again, perhaps in the winter when the sun sets earlier.

Conserve

brighton2sm.jpg

I assume that the whimsical message found next to Brighton Dam is funnier when there is water rushing over the gates. Brighton Dam is located at the end of Triadelphia reservior, which is located on the border between Montgomery and Howard Counties.  It has a very nice park located around the dam from which this picture was taken.  Next to the reservoir is a five acre azalea garden.  Unfortunately my trip to Brighton brought me too late for the azaleas to be in bloom.  It had become five acres of wilted plants.  However, next spring MDP will be on the case.

Leisure World

lw1.jpg

It’s probably not suprising that this globe was built in the 60′s, when Leisure World opened.  Leisure world is a private community, which doesn’t state that it is geared towards “retirement” or “seniors”, but rather says that it is age restricted.  It offers everything a person could need within its gates, food, golf, activities, clubs.. etc.

Antietam 3

antietam3.jpg

Today we have another photo courtesy of Bryan, who took this shot in Antietam specifically becasue it offers more of a pure look at the field; that is to say that it is free from construction and monuments.

Preakness

preakness-snakk.jpg

Well I thought this was appropriate for tomorrow’s big race.  We will soon see who will win the preakneess and “hold” the most valuable trophy in professional sports, the Woodlawn Vase, for the next year.

Are you are wondering about where the name “Woodlawn Vase” came from.  Why not call it the Canton Demitasse, the Sykesville Tankard, or the Dundalk Cup?  You would be wrong to think that it was an arbitrary name, or that it was sponsored by the social security administration.  It turns out that the vase was named after the Woodlawn Racing Association.  That would be Woodlawn, Kentucky.   You can read its full history here.

Also, if this post looks familiar, that’s becasue it is the long awaited sister shot to this post  I know you’ve been waiting.
