State House Doors

state-house-doors-small.jpg

Here’s a shot which I took from a great distance of one of the doors of the State House in Annapolis.  I was going to use this in conjunction with a good line like, “hope your new year opens the door to future success” or “…as we close the door on 2008,” but I’ve decided not to.   2008 was a great year to start MDP and I’m looking forward to some good sight seeing and photo taking in 2009.

Chesapeake Biological Laboratory

cbl-small2.jpg

This is a picture from the original building of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, on Solomon’s Iisland.  From this small building, the lab has grown to take over a sizable piece of the island with modern laboratorys and some of the best bay veiws possible.

Happy Birthday Charles County

charles-county-cake-small.jpg

Charles County celebrated its 350th anniversary this year and it would be bad of me to let the year go by without mentioning it.  This cake can be found on route 5 at the county line on both the north and south sides.   The candles light up at night.  This is sadly my only picture of it, and as you can tell I took it through the windshield of the car.

MDP Holiday Tip #1

crab-ornament-small.JPG

Turns out that if you run out of ornaments, crab cookie cutters make good substitutes.  You all have cookie cutters shaped like crabs, right?

Why isn’t he lit up, you ask?  Well like his bay dwelling bretheren he lurks at the bottom, where there isn’t much light and where he can feed off of fallen candy canes and loose buttons of gingerbread men.

Holiday Train?

holiday-train.jpg

This isn’t exactly your average holiday train display.  However, it is a neat picture.  I caught this train as I was passing over a very unique bridge which still uses wooden beams to support the cars and trucks that pass over it.  In the background is Silver Spring.  As is common along this line, the train was filled to the brim with brand new automobiles.   It also seemed to stretch on for at least 40 or so cars.   I didn’t look to see if any of the cars had a bow on it for the holidays like that irritating lexus commercial.

Lookout

Here’s the lookout tower at the south end of Ocean City.   I like this picture becasue of the way the sun hits those flags.

Hampden

Thought I’d post another picture of Hampden to give people a feel for what the display looks like.  It’s like this on both sides of the street, and in every lawn there’s a display.

Christmas at the Mormon Temple

mt-christmas-sma.jpg

If you’ve ever driven around the capital beltway, chances are you’ve seen the Mormon temple.  Its the giant white building that looks like a futuristic castle, located on the north side of the belt, just about dead center.  This huge building is off limits to the public for most of the year. However, each christmas they decorate all the trees around their parking lot and invite anyone to come take a look for free.   They also have concerts every night.  It’s quite a pretty site.

Santa’s Palace

bal-xmas-house.jpg

Harbor place is kind of like a giant mall with a giant harbor in the middle of it.  Every mall needs a santa, and so in Baltimore, santa gets his own pavillion.  Every year in the middle of harbor place, this building mysteriously appears and St. Nick takes up a residence in palace in the moderate climate of the Mid Atlantic, with its easy access to crab cakes and bowling, while his employees are stuck up in the frigid North.
