Turkey Temperature

turkey-temp.JPG

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  I’m certainly thankful for the delicious meal I had, and I’m also thankful that both the stuffing and the meat were cooked to the proper temperatures, as shown.

Thanksgiving.

hector-small.jpg

Well, becasue today is thankgiving, I can’t post a picture of a turkey becasue it hasn’t been cooked yet.  Hopefully that will be tomorrow’s post.  In the mean time we have something much more significant to Maryland:  Chicken.   This is of course just a serving suggestion, but beer can chickens are delicious and fun.  I don’t know if its applicable to a turkey, though.

Did you know that everywhere else in this country people are complaining about the price of chicken.  However, here, becasue the eastern part of the sate has more hens than people, chicken is relatively cheap.  That’s something I’m thankful for.

Key

pam-and-shelia-sm.jpg

To end this mini-posting series about the tennis challenge, we have a picture of pam shriver and Mayor Shelia Dixon.  What’s significant about this is that the mayor was there, not only to make the commemorative first serve of the Orioles tennis challenge, but also to give Pam the key to the city.

Tennis Challenge

serena-small.jpg

This past Friday, Baltimore hosted Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva in the annual PNC Bank Tennis Challenge.   Every year Pam Shriver organizes this even to raise money for the Baltimore Charitable Foundation.  The challenge is always headlined by one or two of the biggest names in tennis, and this year we were fortunate enough to see just about he biggest name there is.  Here’s a picture of Serena serving during the warmups.  I chose this shot, with the Oriole’s sponsor board as proof that it took place in Maryland.

PG County Library

pg-county-library.jpg

Here’s the public library in Upper Marlboro.   For no rational reason, I believe that this is how a library should look.  It’s a strong looking building.  Perhaps that’s due to the brickwork with its strong colonial influences.  However, it’s also welcoming, and I can’t quite grasp why.  Perhaps the cupola, or the trim.  If there’s anything wrong with it, I’d say its the size.  I just don’t know how many books you can fit into that tiny building.

First Snowfall

snow1.JPG

Yesterday was the first snow I have seen all year, although I understand that in western Maryland there was a little bit of snow on Sunday.   I ran right out and took a picture.  Just to prove that it was snowing in Maryland, we have the Howard County flag, flying proudly in the snow.

The Howard county flag takes elements from other county flags, but has one unique quarter to it.   The county that brought you the “Choose Civility” bumper sticker, brings you a flag with a quarter where a semblance of the county is wrapped in a golden triange, symbolizing Howard County at center of the wealth, not of the state, but of the entire east coast.  I’m going to do my best to hunt down some of the other county symbols, and especially to nab a picture of the county bird: the American Goldfinch.

Also: I’ve fixed the categorization of previous posts, as there were more than 40 uncategorized postings.  Now all the categories on the left side of the site point to the proper postings.  Take a look.

Butterfly

bf3.jpg

This little guy is enjoying himself in the controlled habitat of the butterfly exhibit of Brookside Gardens.    In a corner of Broookside Gardens you’ll find a glass building filled to the brim with butterflies.  You would be amazed by how many different kinds there are.  You’ll also learn (in much more detail than you did in kindergarten) about metamorphosis and the growth stages of butterflies.

Trolley Museum

trolley-small.jpg

Here’s a picture from the National Capital Trolley Museum in Colesville, MD.   Due to the Inter-County connector project (a highway between Montgomery County and Prince George’s County, North of the Capital Beltway). the museum is losing its land and will be moving, though not too far away.  As a result the museum will be closed after this month until mid ’09.  However, the good news about the move is that they will now have improved space for museum exhibits and a space to show/display trolleys from the collection.
