Hon Fest

honfest3.JPG

This past weekend, many of the citizens of Baltimore celebrated HonFest.   Baltimore is home to many a street festival.  There’s a bit of a formula to the baltimore street festival too.  There’s always two parts.  The attraction, in this case the Hons; and the vending.

No other fest draws as much concern from citizens as Hon fest.  Hon is the phrase that Baltimore residents know as “the” Baltimore expression.  That’s why Hon fest is chock full of other Baltiomore stereotypes.  Crab souveneirs, National Bohemian apparell, snoballs. Actually I saw no snoball stand.  I settled for lemonade.

In other cities there are street vendors on corners selling all manner of lunch foods.  In Baltimore, you buy your street foods at the fest and you buy enough to last you till the next fest.

Anyway, afterwards I was told that the HonFest is actually controversial…..qs if associating your town with stereotypical low class activities of the fifties was a bad thing.  I don’t know.  You all can tell me.

OC History Museum

k-feb-08-darnall-oc-ft-was-066-oc-history-500.jpg

I do love a good anchor.   This always fools me because I believe that the building with “Ocean City History” written on its side, should actually contain a museum on Ocean City history.  In a way there is a museum on the boardwalk, which is made up of a few artifacts, like this anchor.   You can learn about the largest shark ever caught off the shores of Ocean City.  That shark does not count in the fishing records as it was actually killed with a gun.   I don’t want to ruin the visit for you by telling you everything there is to learn on the south side of the boardwalk.  So, go see for yourself.

What is this?

pvsp-ruin.JPG

Here’s one of the pictures I took at Patapsco Valley State Park.  Many of the picnic areas at the park are built on and incorporate the ruins of old buildings on the grounds.  Many of the old buildings were used or build by the civilian conservation corps as they were shelters and homes for the corps as the park was being landscaped.  All that said, I still have no idea what this piece of metal does….  Do you?

High Winds, Stay Off Bridge

key-br.JPG
In the background you see the Francis Scott key Memorial Bridge, which carries 695, the Baltimore Beltway, across the river, not the bay.   Not only is the key bridge one of the most recognizable sites in the southern Baltimore skyline, its also one of the most dangerous places for an empty tractor-trailer to be on a windy day.   For some truckers who are carrying light amounts of hazardous materials on windy days, neither the bridge nor the two tunnels are acceptable means of travelling through Baltimore.  For them, the only answer is to travel the opposite direction on the Beltway over land.
Why the sudden interest in tractor trailers, you ask?  Well this is just one of the many thoughts I was having on my commute the other day when I passed the hazmat signs for one of the tunnels.

Baltimore City Hall

city-hall-cropped.JPG

Here is Baltimore’s City Hall as taken from my car stopped in rush hour traffic.   I really enjoyed the light in this picture.  It was the first I took that day as I left Baltimore and travelled south.  Fortunately for me, the sky remained that beautiful shade of blue for the entire day.  I’ll post more from this trip as the week progresses.

Construction for City Hall began in 1867 and the building was dedicated in 1875.  The architect, George A Frederick was only 22 when he designed the building.  How is that?  Well there was a contest, believe it or not, and Frederick won.

NPS Statuary 2

img_0125-500.JPG

Behind this statue is the Gymnasium, which is yet to be refinished.  However, the statue is currently situated in the middle of the newly constructed homes that surround the historic NPS site.   In a rare MDP 2-fer, I’ll show you another view of the same statue where you can see a backhoe in the background behind the gymnasium’s front entrance.

Hot Coals ONLY!!!!!

hot-coals.JPG

Over the weekend, the MDP staff wants to remind you to properly dispose of your hot coals.  Hopefully I’ll be making some hot coals of my own….with my barbeque.  This shot was taken in Ft. Smallwood, just like last fridays.  Ft. Smallwood, by the way is one of the prettiest bayside parks in the state, maybe you could go there to do some barbequing of your own this weekend.

Fountain in Downtown Cumberland

fountain-in-cumberland.JPG

I was about to post a picture of a lamppost in frostburg, but I’m holding off.   Instead here’s a cool fountain in downtown Cumberland.  In downtown Cumberland, Baltimore Street has become a bit of a pedestrian mall with this fountain a few shops, and weekend musical attractions.

Frostburg State

frostburg-state1.JPG

The scenenic railway drops you off in Frostburg where you can have a delicious chicken parmesean sandwich, see some train memorabilia, go to a carriage museum, or walk to the University.   In true Maryland fashion, frostburg state with its brick archetecture is much like college park in miniature.

What do you do there?

wmsrr.JPG

Well one of the things you can do in Cumberland is ride the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.  It’s not often that you get to ride a steam train on a historic railway, especially not in your own state.  For $175 you can ride with the engineer.  You can see where I sat.
