All summer, a series of ships will be coming into the Baltimore harbor. Many of them are training vessels, such as this one; Juan Sebastian de Elcano the sailing training vessel of the Spanish navy, which came to port around a month ago. (sorry for the delay). With four masts, a crew of more than 200, and more than 300 feet in length (113 Meters) it is one of the largest vessels that will visit this year. Of course there are other, mechanically driven vessels, such as a US Navy Destroyer coming soon and a Coast Guard cutter coming later which be much larger. However, for a sailing ship its quite a site. It’s namesake Juan Sebastian de Elcano was captain of one of five ships in a 1519 expedition led by Magellan to find a new route to the “Islands of Spices.” However, the four ships and Magellan himself were lost in the expedition. The sole surviving ship, Victoria was led by Elcano and returned to port in 1522, after sailing around the world.

Whoa–that building in the background looks exactly like Fine Hall, don’t you think?

Yes, in fact it does look like fine. However, the building in the background has five sides, unlike the inferior four sided design of fine hall. In fact, that building, The World Trade Center Baltimore, (no there are no plans to change the name) is the world’s tallest pentagonal building.
