Also for the record, when I hear the song, I think about Maryland My Maryland, but for some reason, in my head, its being sung by the peanuts characters.

I think that the song is best observed as a piece of our history. I had just been discussing this period of time with my family, specifically about the imprisonment of government officials during the war. The song was a product of its time, for better or for worse. As for the tagline, I will have to think about that one.

The poem came first - then later some German musicians in Baltimore set it to O Tannebaum or if you were Catholic (LAURIGER HORATIUS) . Much of Baltimore and Maryland was settled by Germans and today German Americans represent the largest ethnic group in much of Central and Western Maryland. Having grown up here, one does not hear Maryland, My Maryland that often. It, like much of the history of this state is deliberately not taught in schools. To know the state song of MD is to better understand a very critical moment in our state's history and the feelings of her people at that moment.

I grew up in MD and actually find myself singing "O christmas tree" when the maryland anthem comes around (which actually isn't that often...)

i also do this when i hear "Oh Canada", even though the melody isn't the same. :)

I have a question that does not directly pertain to this photo, but came up yesterday when I was watching the Preakness. If you grow up in Maryland, do you wonder why "O Tannenbaum" is set to "Maryland My Maryland," rather than the other way around?

Also, why has the tagline of this site never been "Manly deeds, womanly words"? Or was it and I just missed it?
