Who doesn’t like bowling? Well I certainly like it. Here we have a shot of duckpin bowling, which is a type of bowling that is geographically centered around the state of Maryland. (Possibly encompassed by the state as well). This particular shot came from the Hillendale Bowling Center. For those not from the area, duckpin bowling involves stubbier pins that are spaced like normal tenpins but you also hit them with a smaller ball, which has no finger holes. What’s more, you get three tries per frame. If you clear all the pins on the last try, you just get ten and nothing else. If you think its easy then take a look at the high scores in the background. Or maybe you can’t because the quality of this shrunk photo is pretty poor. Either way they are low. Subtract 100 from a tenpin score and that’s your duckpin score. Feel free to comment with more info as I’ve been pretty vague.

There used to be a duckpin bowling alley in Glenmont of all places. I always thought it was commonplace, and did not learn of the Maryland-centric heritage of duckpins until my college years. Supposedly it was invented in Baltimore.

Bowling, golf, tennis, darts, pool, field-goal kicking, etc. Thank goodness for sports you can play without gathering an army. Be sure to annoy and pester your teacher friends as they now have far too much time off to get into trouble. Happy weekend/tournament watching time everyone!

My mother has told me that when she was growing up in Pittsburgh there was a very popular thing called rubber duckpin bowling, with rubber bands around the tops of the pins. Must be an offshoot of this. I’ve never seen it here, though, so I think it went away before I was born.
