Ellicott City Posts

posts-sm-500x670.jpg

Today’s “post” comes to us from corresponding photographer Trish, who was on assignment in Ellicott city and took this great shot of these posts in the street.  I’m always a fan of nighttime photography but Trish has really done a great job of bringing out the colors on the sidewalk.

As a trivial side note, Ellicott city is in Howard county, which is the only county in Maryland that is neither bordered by water (meaning the bay or the ocean as the Patuxent river does not count) nor bordered by another state.

The lights are gorgeous and grab my attention. But it also does look like there’s a fine gentleman in the background peeing through the rail and another dude marveling at his noodle. A beautiful picture taken by Trish, I’m just saying…

I can’t stifle my excitement, my pride in getting your joke. This is an evocative picture, is it not? The cleverly masqued/updated street lamps, once powered by gaslight, casting garish lumiscence on the cobblestone path, now blood-red, now brown like fæces. An ominous pair of furtive night travelers, lurking beside a stone post, watching the painted ladies hurry by, desperate to escape the black night, and the things in it. The dateline is Ellicott City, but we know what neighborhood this photograph’s aspects truly portray: Whitechapel, where Jack the Ripper made his gruesome marks!

Someone once told me that it is impossible to enter into Howard county without passing over a bridge, as it is bordered by the patapsco river to the north, the patuxent to the south, and railroad tracks separate it from Anne Arundel County…

Someone prove it wrong, so I don’t have to.

According to this map, you can take ridge rd into or out of the county without the use of a bridge. It’s in the far north-west corner of the county.
