Opening Day

scan0001-500.jpg

This picture was taken at Photo Day in Camden Yards in 2004, along with some other pretty cool pictures that I’ll get around to sharing some day.

In the mean time, enjoy this shot of the left field foul pole.  This pole has been in the park since it opened in 1992.    The right field pole (not pictured) was brought over to Camden Yards from Memorial Stadium, making it one of the few veterans left on the field this year.

Also of note: the answer to Friday’s contest will be revealed tomorrow, though I will tell you that the answer has been given.

Lamp Post Contest: Name the City in Maryland

lamp-500x746.jpg

I like street lamps and, as I’ve been traveling for the website, I’ve taken a few photos of them as I’ve gone along.  In today’s contest, lets see who can tell me what Maryland town, city, or other governmental district this lamp comes from.

Due to the special nature of Monday’s “post,” we’ll answer the contest on Tuesday.

Mt Airy

mt-airy-for-post-500.jpg

Some of you might want to know what the home referenced in this picture actually looks like.

What I find interesting about this place is that its primary function is that of a catering/banquet hall.   It seems like most of the historic houses that have not been adopted by the NPS are used for these purposes to raise money for maintenance and probably to raise money for other reasons.  I have mixed feelings about this as I would like for every historic home to be museum that is free to the public, but at the same time I appreciate the fact that these places are not easy or cheap to run and that they require funding.

Ft Mch 2

According to the NPS website one of the reasons for the increase in weaponry during the War of 1812 was that the British were especially angry at sailors from the port of Baltimore as so many of them had turned to pirating.  Apparently, after the US condoned citizens pirating enemy ships, Baltimoreans of the early 19th century went hog wild with it.   Like commissioning salespeople, I think this is a great way to get the public behind your efforts.  Just offer them incentives.

Got Tickets? To the Gun Show.

feb-08-part-2-unitasjericho-hdg-anti-013-500.jpg

As pointed out in the comments, the author of a prior post made a terrible oversight in this photo as they didn’t emphasise the building you see here: The Jerusalem Gun Factory.  From what I gathered in the tour, weapon stocks were built in this building for a short time and hence it garnered the name.

Horses

horse-at-hlk-500.jpg

People forget that Maryland has a significant equestrian heritage.  As one of those people who, with the bustle of my daily activities, had forgotten about that, I was happy to come across this reminder.   I believe that MDP will be making a greater effort to find good horse pictures, possibly by encouraging its photographers to learn how to gamble.

Duckpins

feb-mar-08-oc-to-zoo-121-500.jpg

Who doesn’t like bowling? Well I certainly like it. Here we have a shot of duckpin bowling, which is a type of bowling that is geographically centered around the state of Maryland. (Possibly encompassed by the state as well). This particular shot came from the Hillendale Bowling Center. For those not from the area, duckpin bowling involves stubbier pins that are spaced like normal tenpins but you also hit them with a smaller ball, which has no finger holes. What’s more, you get three tries per frame. If you clear all the pins on the last try, you just get ten and nothing else. If you think its easy then take a look at the high scores in the background. Or maybe you can’t because the quality of this shrunk photo is pretty poor. Either way they are low. Subtract 100 from a tenpin score and that’s your duckpin score. Feel free to comment with more info as I’ve been pretty vague.

Paper Moon

feb-mar-08-oc-to-zoo-173-500.jpg

Just about the most eclectic restaurant you will find in Maryland is the Paper Moon diner.  Their delicious food is served to you by team of waiters who all share the tips and the duty.   The decorations on the outside are largely based on mannequins and old toys and dolls, so its a little like walking into the land of misfit toys.

Seabrook Historic Schoolhouse

feb-mar-08-oc-to-zoo-116-500.jpg

Seabrook historic schoolhouse

This is the Seabrook historic schoolhouse in Seabrook/Lanham, MD.   It opened in 1893, when it serviced the 1st through the 8th grade.   By the time it was closed in 1953, it served as a classroom for only the 1st grade.

In its lifetime it has served as a meeting house for a community association and is currently home to exhibits on school life in the early 20th century.

OC Clock

Well if there are two things I can’t get enough of, they are Esskay hot dogs and the ability to tell time.   I am unable to tell you if that is an official Esskay Oriole frank or not, but either way here it is
